What is Mail Dispatcher?
Mail Dispatcher is a Perl program that handles the tedious task of sending out (dispatching) regularly scheduled email messages. This is particularly useful for people who always have to send several email messages to multiple recipients on a regular basis, but would like to automate the routine. An example of this type of application is sending out a monthly billing statement via email. With Mail Dispatcher, the user simply enters all the information (such as Date-To-Send, Recipient, Subject, and Main Message) into a flat-file database and leave everything up to the script.

How does Mail Dispatcher work?
The user enters all the necessary information into the flat-file database using the Administration Control Center. Here, the user is able to:

  • enter new email messages and schedule them for dispatch at a later date;
  • view what messages are in the queue;
  • delete entries (if needed) from the queue; and
  • dispatch all the email at will.

Unattended Mail Dispatching
Mail Dispatcher checks for the system date. When it sees email messages scheduled for dispatch on the same date, it will dispatch those messages and delete their entries in the database. This process can be done either manually or automatically by creating a cron job.

To manually send out the email messages, all the user has to do is click on a button in the Administration Control Center.

To automatically schedule Mail Dispatcher to do a daily dispatch, you need to create a cron job. A cron job is a Unix process you can create to automatically carry out some instructions even while unattended.

In order for Mail Dispatcher to work properly, the following are required:

  • Webhost server running a Unix operating system (e.g. Linux);
  • Unix sendmail program, properly configured and installed; (also works with Qmail)
  • Perl interpreter, properly configured and installed;
  • proper permissions from your web host admin for you to run custom Perl scripts;
  • ability to run cron jobs on your server - this is highly important if you need automated and unattended dispatching.

In no event will CGI City or the program's author be liable to the user of this script or any third party for any damages, including any lost profits, lost savings or other incidental, consequential or special damages arising out of the operation of or inability to operate this script, even if user has been advised of the possibility of such damages.
